Coal supply in the county in spite of having the fourth largest coal resource in the world has struggled to ramp up at the same pace as demand due to many challenges faced at the production and transportation part of the value chain. During the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012-17), India would face a supply gap of up to 250 mt. This has led to increase in coal imports into the country, during FY13 the thermal coal imports were close to 100 MT and in the FY14 they are expected to be close to 150 MT. To increase domestic coal production private participation in coal mining in India is set to increase. Coal Ministry is planning to auction coal mines and also preparing to offer coal mines in Public Private Partnership model.
